Because so often the stories we hear and the lives deemed important enough to read about have been white. If we want to understand the full sweep of history and understand humanity in its fullness, we need to make a point of reading the stories of all kinds of people. Im hoping this list can be a good starting place if you want to read more widely. I may be stretching the definition of classic just a bitâ€"this list begins in the 11th century and goes up to 1996. I began this post by compiling a list of great memoirs from any time period, but then my list got so long and unwieldy, I thought I could divide it into two. The Oxford English Dictionary refers to induction as, the process of inferring a general law or principle from the observation of particular instances (Induction). Despite their reasoning’s, philosophers such as Hume and Popper have publicly voiced their disagreement and concerns with induction. Food That Tastes Wonderful Is it Olive Garden’s friendly and hospitable service or is it the appetizing and blazing not entrees ll Foranio’s that reminds me of the Italian heritage? Before deciding which restaurant leaves my mouth watering for more, I compare and contrast between taste, service and cost must be considered. For me, choosing which restaurant to recommend to family members is as hard as cutting the perfect pink rose for a floral arrangement. The whole world would be a better place if you could choose a restaurant that always had food that tasted wonderful. Similarly, the salad at both restaurants are always fresh and is dressed with a tangy and light vinaigrette. In the same way, both restaurants offer their ravished customers a wide selection of beverages including sodas, teas and coffee to wet their whistles. Delicious, freshly prepared food is a must when I am spending a night out with friends or family. Service is something that I value highly when spending my hard earned money on a night out. The service at Olive Garden is a snail trying to win the mile run race. However, when I arrive at ll Fornaio’s I am seated almost immediately, whereas at Olive Garden, I have to sign a waiting list and they hand me a flashing disk. The servers at Olive Garden, in contrast, seem sometimes annoyed when I ask for something like more water or an extra plate to share an item. Equally, both restaurants bring my meal in a timely manner. They both give me service with a smile like a sun shinning in the morning sky. Similarly, both places of business are more willing to trade my order if it is not to my satisfaction. If am not going to receive the service I deserve, I might as well walk right out of the establishment and not look back. Do you like throwing your money down the drain? If not, the maybe ll Fornaio’s is not the most cost effective restaurant for you. I often feel that money is flying out of my purse the minute I sit down at my table. On the other hand, ll Fornaio’s does offer more food for the price. An average bill at Olive Garden is about forty dollars, whereas at ll Fornaio’s the final bill can range from fifty to one hundred dollars based on your choice of entrees, appetizers, drinks and desserts. Unlike Fornaio’s, Olive Garden does offer specials on certain dishes at specific times of the year. In the same way, both restaurants offer drinks that are similar in price and that prices included refills. Also, Olive Garden and ll Fornaio’s both have appetizers that are around the same price for the same generous helping. Value is a huge factor in deciding which restaurant I would choose to refer a friend or family member. Yes, Olive Garden offers more food for the money, but the aroma and taste from ll Fornaio’s entrees are by far superior, not to mention the provide better service for the customer. Based on my evaluation of the two restaurants, I would have to choose ll Fornaio’s. Robert Barry Essay The artist Robert Barry states that â€Å"nothing keeps renewing itself the way art does† the meaning behind this statement can be supported by analysing the still life or vanitas of painting in western culture whilst looking through the post-modern frame. The use of the post-modern frame is to primarily analyse and interpret an artwork, taking into account the post-modern and temporary influences and how this many affect the making amp; meaning of the artwork. It is used to examine how changing the context of works can influence the interpretation of the artwork overall. In other words, it could be described as taking something old and making it new. Flemish still life’s were some of the earliest recorded still life paintings. The earliest being Hare (1502) by Albrecht Durer and Dead Bird (1504) by Jacopo de’barbari. As a result of the protestant revolt against the Church of Rome, religious painting declined immensely and encouraged the re-emergence of the Still Life genre in Northern Europe. The development of the genre came with the introduction of allegories into still life through the use of religious or quasi-religious symbolism. This in turn widened its appeal. This was where the birth of Still Life was formed which is the comprised arrangement of symbolic objects designed to remind the viewers of their materialistic place on earth and not to abuse that place in order to receive deliverance from sin. Flemish vanitas artists often used to technique of â€Å"Trompe L’oeil† or â€Å"Trick of the eye† to further the feeling and tone of their creations and help the audience relate to it more with the detailed symbolism that conveyed the meaning behind the painting. All these symbols came together to create an allegory behind the painting, some symbols having allegories within themselves. Some of the most famous Flemish still life painters include Harmen Steenwyck, Pieter Claesz, William Kalf amp; Samuel Hoogstatraten. Still life was from there on interpreted and manipulated to satisfy the ideas of the artist. A classic example of this being Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin. Chardin used less than the considered normal amount of objects in his still life, also using quite usual objects in platonic forms of composition. He provided a mathematical approach to still life, but his creations gave another life to the genre of still life apart from the religious approach. 0th century artist Audrey Flack used her paintings photo-realistic, imagistic symbolism and its association with classical Flemish tradition of Vanitas paintings to present aesthetic amp; sophisticated social commentary to her audience. Flacks paintings come under the genre of vanitas still life and still somewhat relates to the Flemish classical still life, but her paintings have a different intent and overall backbone to it which is what brings the appeal to it. Flack uses Trompe L’oeil to create the realism of the painting, but has made it clear that she is less interested in confusing truth with illusion than in capturing the integral truth of seeing, meaning that she doesn’t want to confuse the truth behind her paintings with the illusion of realism but would like to create the reality to which her audience can fully understand the context and social commentary behind her paintings. Another technique that Audrey uses is the dimensions of her paintings, making her paintings large enough so that if the viewer stands close, you cannot see anything but brush strokes, you need to take a few steps back and fully take in the big picture and all its symbolism together to understand. This also is somewhat of a metaphor for her social commentary. For example; having to look at the bigger picture of feminism and taking in all aspects rather than a few key points or looking at the beauty beyond war and how beauty and war can co-exist, it’s a matter of perception. Applying Flacks works through the post-modern frame is vital for otherwise you will not understand her art works at all. If we put Flacks â€Å"Marilyn† into another context, it could be seen as a colourful and imaginative tribute to amp; celebration of an iconic member of our society. However, it was intended to be more than a simple mural to an actress but to more a memorial to the eternal feminine. This context can be seen with the use of the post modern frame. Two well-known examples of Flacks works include â€Å"Marilyn† (oil over acrylic on canvas, 243. 8 x 243. 8cm, 1977) and â€Å"World War 2† (Oil on canvas, 8ft x 8ft, 1976-1977). Both address vast social issues, as suggested by their names, which are explored throughout generations. Flack places a picture to the voice of the issue. â€Å"Marilyn† explores the concepts of feminism and the place of a woman in a man’s world, more especially on the topics of women in advertising and the sexual objectification of women. â€Å"World War 2† tells an allegory of war and shows the existence of pure evil as well as beautiful humanity and how they can both co-exist. Both paintings use a smorgasbord of symbolism that effectively support the social commentary of the paintings as well as tell an allegory with each object on its own. Another painting of Audrey’s is â€Å"Wheel of Fortune† which I believe is more similar to Flemish vanitas than of the other two paintings I named. This painting illustrates the transient nature of this life. This painting also heavily uses symbolism to create an allegory of life and how no matter our status, or materialistic belongings in the end we will still come closer and closer to the inevitable death that is our fate. We can drown ourselves in jewels, wealth and all the pleasures that life gives us but that won’t stop death. Materials don’t last forever but memories do. Although Flack is heavily influenced by the work of 17th-century Dutch still life painters, by celebrating the lush textures and colours of the physical world with her densely packed depictions of illusionistically-rendered objects†¦ she is also noticeably different to them as they depict allegories whereas she represents social issues of generations past and continuing, the painting renews itself with every new issue brought to the cause of the painting†¦ furthermore renewing itself as the quote says. Along with this, Flemish/Dutch painters are more religiously based whereas Audrey is not. To conclude, my investigation has thoroughly supported Robert Barry’s quote â€Å"nothing keeps renewing itself the way art does†. Audrey Flack is a key example of this for although she is a 20th century artist, she addresses issues that were relevant 400 years ago in an aesthetic and symbolic way. Issues such as feminism, war amp; the overall transience of life. Looking at her artworks through the post-modern frame truly shows how still life can represent both old and new concepts of life amp; reborn it in a way that almost any one with critical validation can relate to.

Defining Culture Essay

How can you define culture? What is intercultural communication? How much does the same language used by native and non-native speakers vary? This paper would attempt to answer. Three sources on the subject matter will be used. These are: Jan Blommaert’s â€Å"How much culture is there in intercultural communication? †, â€Å"Talking a Person into Interethnic Distinction: a Discourse Analytic Case Study† by Volker Hinnenkamp and â€Å"Rapport Management Theory and Culture† by Helen Spencer-Oatey. In the first article, Blommaert focused on what theory or theories in the science of linguistic would be most useful to obtain an accurate analysis of intercultural communication as well as the role to the study of linguistics plays in the study of intercultural communication. The author began the article with the thesis that the study of intercultural communication will pose challenges in the science of linguistics due to two reasons. One of these reasons is that each communication by two parties from two different cultures would have certain features that would make it unique that it would need a specific methodology and theory to be elaborated for every communication that occurs. The second reason is that the study of intercultural communication would need the knowledge of other branches of the social sciences such as social psychology and anthropology for it to be properly analyzed (13). Two concepts were used by the author in order to answer the questions stated in the article. The first is that culture is fundamental in the study of intercultural communication, and the primary cause for communication conflicts that may rise in intercultural communication. The author coined this as the â€Å"culture collide perspective. † This is because when two parties belonging to different culture groups meet, their cultures also come across and eventually collide with each other. One example provided by the author to support this is the conflict present in politics. The author considered this perspective as a crude approach in understanding intercultural communication since this concept follows that intercultural communication only occurs when conflict is present in the process and in order for the communication to be successful; the culture of any one of the parties involved would need to be managed. The concept is also seen by the author as ethnocentric in nature in that it assumes that one culture in the intercultural communication process is more superior to the other. Furthermore, it fails to take into consideration the fact that one or both parties involved will try to adjust to the situation prevent intercultural communication conflicts (Blommaert, 14, 17-20). The second concept analyzed in the article is that culture is incorporated into the communication process, depending on the circumstances surrounding the parties involved and represented clearly and without reservation during the process. This makes culture as not only a vital component to the identity of the parties involved, but the situation surrounding the communication in general (Blommaert, 21-22). Based on the information obtained, Blommaert concluded that the non-objective approach is the most appropriate linguistic method to be used in the analysis for intercultural communication. Furthermore, the study of linguistics in intercultural communication should be able to represent a collaborative accord between parties from different cultures (30). The second article is a case study an intercultural communication scenario between a Turk and a German. The case study aimed to show how communication problems arise when two parties communicate using a language which the native to one party and foreign to another as a result of on how the experiences of each party affect how they interpret the message being sent (Hinnenkamp, 91). According to Hinnenkamp, the culture of an individual affects various aspects of the communication process such as the degree of interaction permitted, how often will an individual will allow the other to respond, what topics to discuss, how direct he or she can be in addressing or questioning the other party, and their obligations in reference to their status. Should any of these aspects are not met; one or both parties would attempt to â€Å"repair† the communication by neutralizing and restoring the normative order as dictated by culture who considers the language being used as its native language. This is most exemplified in intercultural communication when an individual speaks in a language that is not native to him or her where the individual tries various methods like mimicking in order to make himself or herself understood (106, 108). The third article focused more on the reactions of the receiver of the message in a communication process. The article aimed to identify factors that affect the judgment of an individual involved interpersonal communication (Spencer-Oatey, 336-337). Spencer-Oatey defined culture as an indistinct collection of attitudes, beliefs, assumptions and values shared by a group of people which influence an individual’s behavior and how the individual views another’s behavior which has a major impact in scenarios where intercultural issues are present (338-339). Contrary to Blommaert’s statement, the author believes that culture is not always manifested depending on the situation when intercultural communication is present. She stated that on some occasions, certain very deep-seeded cultural traits will manifest itself in the intercultural communication process regardless if the situation makes it conducive or not (340). This is because individuals have the freedom to choose whether to uphold, modify or abandon his or her cultural practices when communicating. Culture, then is not manifested in a single encounter. Rather, it becomes only apparent when patterns in communicating develop (342). She did, however, agree that what goes on in an intercultural communication cannot be accurately predicted (345). In the article, John Gumperz specified the variation that occurs in intercultural communication between a native and non-native speaker are the â€Å"different conventions of communication, different speech styles, narrative patterns, in short, the deployment of different communicative repertoires† (qtd. in Spencer-Oatey, 343). The author concluded the article stating that more research is needed in order to fully understand intercultural communication. Unlike Blommaert who recommended that further research must concentrate in being able to gain an agreement between parties in the communication process to occur (30), Spencer-Oatey stated that in order to understand the process, the research should be continuous since intercultural communication occurs in relationships that have spanned for a long period of time (346). To summarize, intercultural communication refers to the interaction between two parties belonging to two different cultures where the culture of each party is manifested in the communication process depending on the length of time the interaction has been taking place and the situation surrounding the communication activity. Culture was defined in the texts as a vague group of attitudes, beliefs, behavioral principles, assumptions and values shared by a group of individuals that influence their conduct as well as how they interpret the behavior another. Finally, certain variations occur in intercultural communication between a native to the language being used and a non-native using the same language in order to be understood by the other.
